Book N Gauge 15: New Voices with Richard Ali and Abubakar Adam Ibrahim

WPulpfaction Book Club will this Saturday, 25th  August, 2012, host Parresia authors, Richard Ali and Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, at Debonair Bookstore, 294 Herbert Macaulay Way, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos.

Hannah Chima, the enchanting dramatic poet, will also be trilling the audience with words that capture the heart, and supernova music act, Femi Leye, will provide the musical treat.

Richard Ali

Richard Ali is a lawyer with every sense of a philosopher’s disposition. Born in Kano but spent some of his formative years in Jos, Ali became the youngest magazine Editor in Nigeria when he was at the Sarduana Magazine, a Kaduna based magazine, in 2004. At present, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Sentinel Nigeria Magazine, www.sentinelnigeria.org, an enigmatic online magazine that has pooled Nigerian literary, oral and intellectual resources with a growing local and international acclaim.

Ali has garnered accolades without losing humility; he is the runner-up at the 2008 John la Rose Short Story Competition. In March 2008, he was selected amongst 50 other emerging Nigerian writers to participate in the British Council’s Radiophonics Workshop. He is currently the Publicity Secretary of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). Ali has just completed a 6-week residency at the Wale Okediran’s Ebedi Writers Residency Programme.

Ali is the author of the warmly received 2012 novel, City of Memories. City of Memories is a novel that describes the north with the transparency of humaneness and exposes the conflict of ideology.

 

Abubakar Adam Ibrahim

Abubakar Adam Ibrahim dabbled into poetry and plays but is more at home with prose, where he likes to explore characters and plots. He won the BBC African Performance Prize in 2007 and the ANA/Plateau/Amatu Braide Prize for Prose the following year. He also emerged runner-up for the ANA Plateau Poetry Prize.

Abubakar is a fellow of the British Council Radiophonics creative writing workshop and has been selected for the Fidelity Bank Creative Writing Workshop as well as the Caine Prize for African Writing Workshop (2012). He has been featured on several online webzines where his short fictions and essays have been well received locally and internationally. He has also been featured in Daughters of Eve and Other Stories from Nigeria published by CCC Press, London in 2010.

His debut collection of short of stories, The Whispering Trees, is published in Nigeria by Parressia Publishers, and has been described as a series of wonderful character portraits.

Educated at the University of Jos, Nigeria, where he Obtained a degree in Mass Communication, Abubakar had a stint with the Vanguard newspapers. He is currently the Arts Editor of the Abuja-based Sunday Trust newspaper.

Femi Leye – Music

Femi Leye is a Jazz guitarist who has been in love with the guitar and has been playing for about 10 years. He merges different genres and styles of music and his deep African roots to create a unique cosmopolitan genre. He is a producer, song writer and music tutor.

He has worked with a lot of A-list artistes like K’ore, Bouqui, IGE, Rooftop MC, Capital FEMI, GT da Guitarman, but to mention a few. He has also rocked the same stage with 2face, Dbanj, Psquare, Omawunmi, Sammie Okposo, Lara George, Nikki Laoye, MI, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, Timi Dakolo, amongst others.

Hannah Chima – Poetry

Hannah is a dramatic poet with the voice of an enchantress. She can be called a disciple of the Ify Omalicha school of Poetry. The Late Ify Omalicha was not only her mentor but also her teacher at the University of Ibadan. Hannah Chima delivers her lines with the equal proportion of skill and elegance that is of international stage touchstones.

Hannah Chima has performed in different forums as a member of the Ify Omalicha Poetry group.
